Migration from rural to urban environments (urbanization) is primarily driven by economic forces. People seek out cities as a source of improved income and an increase in overall quality of life. If a city is properly managed, it can indeed increase the quality of life of its citizens. As expendable income increases, so too does the consumption of important resources like water. Increases in average income, population, and population density can put intense stress on water distribution infrastructure as well as sanitation services.
