C(8,4)

OpenStudy (mathmate):

=8!/(4!4!)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathmate So, it's really 8x7x6x5/4!

OpenStudy (mathmate):

yes, correct, but you can also evaluate numerically.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean by that?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Using a calculator or on a sheet of paper, you can simplify the expression to a number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my answer was 70 by just multiplying everything out

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Yes, it's correct. :)

OpenStudy (mathmate):

In general, C(n,r)=n!/(r!(n-r)!), that's why C(8,4)=8!/(4!4!).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@matemate so for 10,6 it would be 10!/4!6!

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Exactly, C(10,6)=10!/(6!4!).

@mathmate i have 2 slightly more difficult questions which i'm not sure how to solve, either. those last two were just checking. thank you for helping. if you would like to help with the next two that would be GREATLY appreciated

In baseball’s World Series, two teams (Team AL and Team NL) play a best-of-7 series of games, with the first team to win four games winning the series. How many ways can a World Series be played such that Team AL wins four games in a row? and I have no idea how to model this problem.

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Perhaps I don't understand the question, but I only see one way, which is WWWW, if it is required to win four games in a row.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, i guess they can win 4 straight or lose 1 and win 4 straight or lose 2 and win 4 straight or lose three then lose 4 straight

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but, i don't know how to model that without doing process of elimination like i did.
