Todd forgot the first two numbers of his locker combination. The numbers can be any number between 1 through 6. What is the probability that he will guess the first number correctly and the second number incorrectly? Is 1/36 correct?
Well, there are six possible numbers, but then there is another number with six possible combinations, so 6 + 6= 12, then you know that they can be in any order like 3,5 or 2,6 so you double the 12. So if there are 24 different combinations, then your next question is to find out how many will work, and that's easy. There of course is only one correct combination, thus making 1/24 although I will work it out and be right back to confirm it.
Hmm.. Well.. i'm thinking it's either 1/24 or 1/36, because the combination can go in different order while still containing the same numbers. I'd go with 1/36
