The answer is A. :) D doesn't have any commas, even though they are needed. C uses "whom" which is incorrect. You would use "whom," if you could write the sentence using Him, but you can't, you have to write it as "He was once.." B doesn't have "who" in there. You must have that in there so that you are identifying who you are talking about.
