OpenStudy (irishboy123):

multiply each side by -6

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

|dw:1445627824529:dw|

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

A. No solution B. -2 or 2 C. -72 or 72 D. 72 Thanks for helping!

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

Ok!

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

so \(|x| = ????\)

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

I got 72

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

so if \(|x| = 72\), what can x be?

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

So the answer is 72? D?

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

what is |-72| ???

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

-6?

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

| | means absolute value. so |3| = 3 and |-3| = 3 what is |-72| ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so, |x| over -6 = -12. First we need to find X, So multiply each side of the equation by -6, SO! If X is you believe you got 72, test it first by diving it by -6, that equals 12! A negative and a positive make what???? A negative! So it's true that positive 72 divided by negative (-6), equals negative (-12)! So you are correct, it is D. Hope this helps, Have a nice day, Let me know if you need help on anymore questions! @JokerSmart

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

it is not D

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

Thank you both on helping me!

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

So, its not positive?

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

try this again | | means absolute value. so |3| = 3 and |-3| = 3 what is |-72| ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@JokerSmart It would be D, or C, but on other looks, I'd say C due to -72 being included in the options. Sorry if I don't make much sense! :)

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

I'll just go with C, since it has both, no problem!

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

I went over my work, I totally think its C now :) Thanks guys!!!

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

" It would be D, or C,...." :p you shouldn't come on here answering stuff that you don't understand. pure and simple.

OpenStudy (jokersmart):

WELL, both answers are correct- in a way. Haha.

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

they're not both correct! that 's the point :p if you say \(|x| = 72 \implies x = 72\) you would be wrong because \(|x| = 72 \implies x = \pm 72\)
