A basketball is thrown upwards. The height f(t), in feet, of the basketball at time t, in seconds, is given by the following function: f(t) = −16t2 + 94t + 12 Which of the following is a reasonable domain of the graph of the function when the basketball falls from its maximum height to the ground? 2.9375 < t < 6 2 < t < 5 1 < t < 4 0 < t < 3

OpenStudy (help_people):

@ganeshie8 a?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

we have checked this before yes it is A

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

The time the ball takes to hit the ground is the same time it takes for the ball to reach a maximum height multiplied by two, since it takes the same amount of time to go from the peak of its apex back down to the ground. At the apex, the speed of the ball is zero, so take the derivative of h(t), set it to zero, solve for t and that will be the time the ball takes to reach the peak.

OpenStudy (help_people):

not its not multiple chocice @ganeshie8

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

$$ \cfrac{d}{dt}h(t)=-32t+94=0\\ t=\cfrac{-94}{-32}=\cfrac{47}{16}\\ $$ So the time for the ball to reach the ground is twice this: \(\cfrac{47}{8}=5.875\) The time from the apex to the time it reaches the ground is just \(t=\cfrac{47}{16}=2.9375\) So we would expect at least this about of time for the ball to hit the ground from its apex.

If (x + 1)2 = 55, what is the approximate positive value of x? 2.71 5.42 6.42 7.35

OpenStudy (help_people):

C?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Yep 6.42

A ball is thrown upward from the top of a building. The function below shows the height of the ball in relation to sea level, f(t), in feet, at different times, t, in seconds: f(t) = −16t2 + 34t + 80 The average rate of change of f(t) from t = 5 seconds to t = 7 seconds is _____ feet per second. Answer for Blank 1:

OpenStudy (help_people):

-158? how and why

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

average rate of change is same as the slope find the slope of segment joining points (5, f(5)) and (7, f(7))

OpenStudy (help_people):

ok
