-x- y inside two lines a)x=10.6 y=-3.5 b)x=-3.5 y=10.6 c)x=-3.5 y=-10.6
@phi
do you mean | -x-y | ?
the y only is inside two lines
does that mean to change the sign?
those mean absolute value. it changes inside to positive. if it's already positive, it has no effect but if what is inside is negative , it makes it positive so |1| = 1 but |-1|= 1
is it -x - |y| ?
so the first one will be -10.6 -3.5
yes
yes, a is -10.6-3.5 which is -14.1
b)-3.5-10.6?
no
why does- 3.5 have to be positive?
-x can be thought of as -1*x
so its positive
if x is -3.5 then -x is +3.5
so then the last two are the same
You can think of it either as -x means -1*x so -1*-3.5 is +3.5 or you can think: if x is -3.5, then -x must be the opposite sign, so +3.5 (I use the first way of thinking, but both ways work)
yes, the last two become the same number.
so its 3.5-10.6
yes, and that is ?
thanks so much u r very helpful and explain the main stuff so the answer is 7.1 or negative
it's a negative result. in grade school people are taught: if the "big" number is negative, do "normal" subtraction but make the answer negative so do 10.6 -3.5= 7.1 then make it minus: -7.1
i believe its - because you have 3 of something u cant take 10 away or u will be short
thank u
or it could mean it's 3 degrees outside, and gets 10 degrees lower 3-10= -7 making it -7 degrees
yep
