I need help finding the subject of this passage... thanks! medal and fan will be rewarded!
"At his entrance before the king, all the people gave a great shout. The queen of Appamatuck was appointed to bring him water to wash his hands, and another brought him a bunch of feathers, instead of a towel to dry them: having feasted him after their best barbarous manner they could, a long consultation was held, but the conclusion was, two great stones were brought before Powhatan: then as many as could laid hands on him, dragged him to them, and thereon laid his head, and being ready with their clubs, to beat out his brains, Pocahontas the king's dearest daughter, when no entreaty could prevail, got his head in her arms, and laid her own upon his to save him from death: whereat the Emperor was contented he should live to make him hatchets, and her bells, beads, and copper; for they thought him as well of all occupations as themselves. For the king himself will make his own robes, shoes, bows, arrows, pots; plant, hunt, or do anything so well as the rest."

Read the following passage and write a brief paragraph that identifies: a) the subject of the passage b) the author's purpose for writing c) the intended audience d) the tone of the piece, and e) the perspective or point of view. this is what i have to figure out. I have some of them but not all... any help will be appreciated!
uh...
which are the ones you already have?
i have the point of view, tone of piece, and the intended audience i am not quite sure about. I do not have the subject or the authors purpose @tanya123
it's long, but it's really only about 3 sentences.. if you've seen the movie pocahontus by disney, this would be the scene where they tried to execute john smith. it describes what they did in preparation to execute him, and then why they didn't
They didn't execute him because Pocahontas stepped in front of John Smith preventing his death. in preparation they had him in a tend tied to a pole @gahoolianowl
dont base the actions entirely off the movie. it's disney after all. i used it more as a reference to guide your mind to where it needed to go
well in the passage they say that John Smith washed his hands and dried the with feathers. His head was laid on two stone getting ready to be beaten to death basically, then Pocahontas gathered him in his arms to save him. and the last part i think it that the King will make her bells and etc. and will make his own robes, shoes, bows, etc. ...?
@gahoolianowl
i think the part about the king was just an expression the author used, considering the king was pocahontus's father, and that it vaguely implies the expectation that the spared man (john smith) was that he'd take care of pocahontus. (the expression being that every man should be just as capable and willing to put forth effort as any other, regardless of position). i could be wrong on that part, but that is my personal interpretation of what's written
okay thanks! and what is the authors purpose?
to find the purpose, you'd need to know what this exerpt is from, who wrote it, and who their intended audience is. my guess (since i don't know what exactly it's from or who wrote it) is that it's an informative passage written to proven information on a historical moment in the relations between colonists and native americans around Jamestown, Virginia
sorry, *provide*, not proven
[The Settlement Of Jamestown - 1607 by Captain John Smith; third book of the five volume "The Generall Historie of Virginia, New England and the Summer Isles: Together with The True Travels, Adventures and Observations, and a Sea Grammar" (London, 1624)]
then yes, my previous assumption would be correct. historical documentation of events and relations between native americans and colonists, written by a primary source (person who was actually there)
@gahoolianowl thank you!
my pleasure. tag me if you need help with anything else, and i'll do my best to help, though i'm only online on Sundays
