Number systems conversion question:

OpenStudy (trojanpoem):

Is there any trick to convert between number systems ? I am not allowed to use the calculator so it's kinda difficult for e.x: D78543 (Hex to decimal) = D * 16^5 +7 * 16^4 + 8 ^ 16^3 + 5 ^ 16^2 + 4 * 16^1+ 3 * 16^0 Even I don't know how much is 16^5

OpenStudy (knightofpentacles):

o.e

OpenStudy (knightofpentacles):

baru is a math magician lol

OpenStudy (baru):

i wish :p

OpenStudy (trojanpoem):

@Michele_Laino

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

you can compute \(16^5\) by hand, it is not difficult

OpenStudy (trojanpoem):

Exam time : 10 min , 10 questions, 1 min each Surely computing it will overtake the allowed period.

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

ok! I understand

OpenStudy (trojanpoem):

I tried to search for a trick for this and found this name Raghavendra Lingayya but couldn't dig further.

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

you can try to memorize the first powers of \(16\)

OpenStudy (baru):

if your desperate enough, just mug the higher powers of 16 and go :P

OpenStudy (baru):

lol

OpenStudy (trojanpoem):

@baru , xD I will fail the exam. Raghavendra allege that he got a method to solve this in seconds http://numbersystems.blogspot.com.eg/2007/09/number-systems.html Well, I neither found nor understood it.

OpenStudy (trojanpoem):

Ok, any division tricks , multiplication trick ? That's the life moving from inverse function and integration to long division and power :(

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

I'm sorry, I don't know R-analysis

OpenStudy (trojanpoem):

No other method ? Or at least tell me how to divide 63933 over 16 easily.

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

I'm able to compute that division by hand only, I'm very sorry :(

OpenStudy (trojanpoem):

Ok, how ?

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

Many years ago I start to study computer science, with Commodore 64. I had to read a little manual, wherein it was necessary to memorize the powers of \(2\), so I started to memorize them, and I know, for example which: \(2^{16}=65536\) so your number is not divisible by \(16\) thatis my knowledge

OpenStudy (trojanpoem):

Yeah, I am supposed to divide it over 16 and keep the reminder.

OpenStudy (knightofpentacles):

theres a book you can learn math tricks

OpenStudy (knightofpentacles):

surprisingly cheap

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

maybe there is a divisibility criteria by 16

OpenStudy (trojanpoem):

@KnightOfPentacles , Throw that piece of pellet to me, if it works with number systems. @Michele_Laino , multi-knowledge xD

OpenStudy (knightofpentacles):

you can go far beyond doing the math its just triple the work lol....

OpenStudy (knightofpentacles):

straight memorization
