OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

I need help with an area and width question!! Please help!!

OpenStudy (crazyelephant):

I might be able to help what is it?

OpenStudy (crazyelephant):

I am not very good at math though

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

I will type in the first part! Mike want to build a rectangular garden box with a total area of 250 square feet. If the length is 25 feet what must be the width? a)Write an equation that shows the relation between the relation of the numbers using w as the variable for width.

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

@dan815-will you look at this too?!

OpenStudy (crazyelephant):

Well i think you do 25w = 250. but i am not 100% positive

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

@pooja195-- would you also look!?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

Is that your answer for (a)--the second part of this!?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

beyonced98--do you know this??

OpenStudy (crazyelephant):

thats my answer for a, but i dont know if its right what is part b?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

solve for w

OpenStudy (crazyelephant):

well i think then you would just divide 250/25=10. but that would only cover length and width not height.

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

@ganeshie8 will you look at this please??

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

@TheSmartOne will you please help!!???

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

I will post the question again

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

Mike want to build a rectangular garden box with a total area of 250 square feet. If the length is 25 feet what must be the width?

OpenStudy (baru):

@darkbeautystar how do you find area of a rectangle?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

you multiply the perimeter on 2 of the sides

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

please help Nnesha- i really dont understand

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

I really just need help

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Area = Length * Width

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Seems like Ganeshie has come to the rescue, no need for me anymore :P

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

He is offline

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Ok Area = length x width area = 250 length = 25 So 250 = 25 x width can you solve for width?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

i can try

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

w=10ft

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

correct, so that's your width :)

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

thanks

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

then what would be this q- Write an equation that shows the relation between the relation of the numbers using w as the variable for width.

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

I have this q with (a)-(d)

Nnesha (nnesha):

i just feel the earthquake on this post

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

so pretty much 4 qs about the same thing

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

What??

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

I just need help with these 2 questions (a)--Write an equation that shows the relation between the relation of the numbers using w as the variable for width. <----don't know what this means (b)--solve for length in a garden box where the area is 100 square feet and the width is 12.5 feet <---- not sure what to do

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

please help

OpenStudy (phi):

for (a), I think they want you to write length*width= area and fill in the numbers for length and area, to get 25w = 250

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

thanks- do you know for b

OpenStudy (phi):

for (b), first write down the formula for finding the area of a rectangle.

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

so w*l=a

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

@phi

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

@DatChinookGuy

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

I just need help with (b) now phi

OpenStudy (phi):

** so w*l=a*** yes now replace the letters you have numbers for. they tell you for question (b) area is 100 square feet and the width is 12.5 feet do you know how to do that ?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

not really--could you teach me

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

well actually yes i think so-- 100*12.5=a

OpenStudy (phi):

in w*l= a w is short for "width". if you know the width is 12.5, then you can erase the "w" and put in 12.5 instead

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

ya i know

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

was my equation right

OpenStudy (phi):

**well actually yes i think so-- 100*12.5=a*** that is close but remember the "a" is area. you replace the "L" (the length) try again

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

100*a=12.5 or 100*12.5=l

OpenStudy (phi):

start with w*L= A now replace the w with 12.5 replace the A with 100 leave the L alone

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

12.5*100=l

OpenStudy (phi):

no, go slower. w*L= A first, erase the w, and put in 12.5 what do you get ?

OpenStudy (phi):

you get 12.5*L= A now erase the A, and put in 100 instead what do you get ?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

100

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

I dont get it

OpenStudy (phi):

do you understand we start with this formula w*L= A ? that is how you find area. It "says" width times length is area if we had a number for width, we can replace the letter w with its number In problem (b), they say width is 12.5 so the first step is replace the w with 12.5 in w*L=A can you do that ?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

yes--12.5*l=a

OpenStudy (phi):

the "w" is a place holder to remind you where to put the width (as a number)

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, that is good 12.5*L= a (I am using L instead of l, because little l looks too much like one 1 ) next, problem (b) says the area is 100 in 12.5*L=a which letter stands for area ?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

yes i know that

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

a

OpenStudy (phi):

so if you know the area is 100 where do you put the 100 in 12.5*L= a ?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

12.5*L=100

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, and that is the answer for (b) you can also write it 12.5L= 100 because when we multiply a number times a letter, people don't bother to show the multiply sign.

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

thankyou so much- thanks for being pateint. I have more questions about different math questions but if you dont want to help you dont have to. there are only 2

OpenStudy (phi):

wait! -solve for length in a garden box so we have to find what number L is to do that, we start with 12.5 L = 100 and divide both sides by 12.5 \[ \frac{12.5}{12.5}L= \frac{100}{12.5} \]

OpenStudy (phi):

on the left side, 12.5/12.5 is 1 so the left side becomes 1*L and that is L what do you get for the right side?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

1? I dont really know

OpenStudy (phi):

can you do 100 / 12.5 ? divide 12.5 into 100 you can use a calculator?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

Yes

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

8

OpenStudy (phi):

so here is what you did start with 12.5L= 100 divide both sides by 12.5 \[ \frac{12.5}{12.5}L= \frac{100}{12.5} \] simplify both sides \[ 1\cdot L = 8 \\ L= 8 \]

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

so is that the answer??

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

:/

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. length is 8

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

so i just put l=8 ?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

L=8

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. But they may want you to show the work, which is posted up above.

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

ok--do you want to help with 2 more. or not

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

@phi

OpenStudy (phi):

what is c) ?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

c is solve for w- which i answered 10ft

OpenStudy (phi):

what is the next question?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

that is it for that question- but there are 2 totally different questions

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

which is what i tried to tell you- im sorry- i guess you didnt get that

OpenStudy (phi):

can you make a new post, please ?

OpenStudy (darkbeautystar):

ya
