How do the properties of elements compare to the properties of the compound they could form?

Elements are the purest forms of substances in existence. Meaning that they can't be broken down into other substances. Compounds are substances formed when two or more elements combine chemically. A compound can sometimes have physical and chemical properties that have no similarity to the properties of the elements that combined to make it.
