Say your trying to see how a 3 plants grow over the weekend.. You leave 1 grass seeds in front of the window and you leave one apple seed 10 inches away and the last pear seed is far from the window.. Of course whichever one has the most sunlight will grow faster... So, all of the plants need the same amount of sunlight for you to know which will grow faster.

Also, say they all have equal sunlight. but you give two of the plants 1 spoon of water and you give the 3 plant 2 spoons. It's not fair that the third one gets more water! That ruins the data! You need the amount of water to be constant for you to see the real differences between them.
