7- Which of the following best describes the lives of the native peoples under the encomienda system? A. They became rich, but could not be government officials because they were not born in Spain. B. They were very poor, forced to work the land or in the mines, and died from beatings, hunger, and disease. C. They stuck to their own religions and rejected the Catholicism of the Spanish. D. They increased in numbers under Spanish rule.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The encomienda system was made to kind of resemble the feudal systems in Europe...except they were supposed to be better as the Native Americans got to keep their land. They, like feudal serfs, were supposed to be able to be taxed a summoned for labor, but no judicial power was given to the Spanish of the Native Americans. (How Europeans thought that they had the rights to lands that were already occupied goes beyond me...manifest destiny or something of that sort) But of course as history shows, the Europeans went beyond the rights they imposed upon themselves. Due to discrimination and the Christian mission propagated by the Crown of Castile, there could not be a sense of "fairness" to the Native Americans and the lands taht were supposed to be appropriated to them. As Europeans explored, the lands distributed from the encomienda system were redrawn and shrunk to make room for settlers. And the rest, as they say, is history. For more information, look up the wiki for this system in the source link. Also check the sources and other articles though either the wiki article itself or google it.
