The equation \[\frac{ y }{ 3 }-12=-7\] is solved in several steps below \[\frac{ y }{ 3 }-12+12=-7+12\] determine which step this is: addition property of equality subtraction property of equality multiplication property of equality division property of equality simplifying distributive property
In that step, they're adding 12 to both sides. Do you know what each of the properties listed mean?
no @rowbe98 thats why im confused i need help
Okay, no worries! :) The four equality properties are simply stating that if you do something to one side, you must do it to the other side as well. So for the subtraction property, for example, it states that if you subtract, say, 2 from one side of the equation, you have to subtract 2 from the other side as well. Same goes for the additive property, if you add something to a side, do it to both. The distributive property tells you if you have a problem like this : 5(x+2), you distribute the 5 to both the x and the 2, giving you 5x+10. Simplifying is just that, simplifying a problem by doing things like adding like terms. Does this all make sense?
yea kinda but does that mean the equation in the question is additive or subtractive?
Are they adding or subtracting 12 from both sides?
If you're adding something to both sides, it's the addition property of equality. If you're subtracting from both sides, it's the subtraction property :)
