Originally opening Off-Broadway in October of 1967, the rock musical's nude scene, it's irreverence for the American flag, the profanity and the treatment of sexuality, in addition to it's depiction of the usage of illegal drugs, instigated a lot of commentary and controversy. Several of it's songs became peace movement anthems.
