The subject is the topic or idea the author is presenting through the conflict and resolution of their story. Subject is like the foundation of the story. The topic may be friendship, war, love, etc. Don't confuse this with the theme, though! The theme is the author's opinion on the subject, for example, if the subject is love, and the theme is "love is useless". Hope this helps you! :)
