1755: Braddock Expedition

OpenStudy (abbycross167):

Washington building Fort Necessity provoked a French attack that started the French and Indian War. The Albany Congress was a meeting of colonial representatives to agree a unified policy in trade and negotiations with Native Americans,as their aid was seen as vital to success in the war. General Braddock led a British force from Virginia that was intended to capture Fort Duquesne. This force was ambushed by the French and their native allies near the Monogahela river. Most of the British regulars were shot down, while the Virginia militia (led by George Washington) cowered in the trees.Braddock was killed and the British forced to retreat. Quebec was captured by the British, This gave them control of the St. Lawrence river, and left only Montreal (captured the following year) as a French stronghold in Canada.
