What were the key issues in the Lincoln-Douglas debates? Question 3 options: Douglas was handsome and Lincoln was ugly The key issue they debated upon was that Douglas was pro-slavery and Lincoln was anti-slavery. Who would win the election. Lincoln did not want to see slavery expand. Douglas believed in popular sovereignty.
@wwhitlock
Well the key issues were definitely not A or C. Whats do you think about the question?
B?
Well Douglas believed in popular sovereignty.
While B is right about Lincoln not wanting slavery to expand, it is the part about Douglas that will be key. So what is your answer?
Slavery is the issue behind the popular sovereignty debate.
Well @wwhitlock what do you think the answer is? I do believe D, but I would like to double check.
They didn't really argue for or against slavery as an institution. The way politicians talked about slavery at that time was state's rights. So Douglas is saying states should decide if they allow slavery. Lincoln is saying no more states should have slavery. So you instincts are good. But the political rhetoric of the time makes D the correct response. You are correct.
Thats what I thought I just wanted to ensure I was right.
