why did the u.s annex Hawaii what did it take to make it happen

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Sugar companies had to pay a tariff on sugar imported to the US. If Hawaii was part of the US, there would be no tariff. So the companies hire some people to revolt against Queen Liliuokalani. She abdicated, US Marines got involved and a treaty was sent to the Senate to annex Hawaii. Grover Cleveland was against imperialism. When he was elected president, he withdrew the treaty from the Senate. The American people were in favor of annexation though, so the annexation happened. Cleveland, and anybody who looks at what happened, labeled the whole thing shameful. But when the War with Spain broke out, Hawaii was a very important naval base. So we kept it and forgot that bit of history while we enjoy the beaches.

Your own words sounds like a great idea. My indent is to help, not do the work for you. You've got a good attitude about it.
