The weapons were not superior. The Aztec had a highly trained military with overwhelming strength. Even with gunpowder, the Spanish would have not defeated the Aztecs with out allies among Aztec enemies. They didn't have enough firepower to overwhelm the Aztecs. The conquistadors were quite motivated by religion et al. They were ready to win or die. Disease spread from Europeans to natives, not the other way around.
