A certain lock has five tumblers, and each tumbler can assume six positions. How many different possibilities are there?

OpenStudy (some.random.cool.kid):

whats 5x 6? thats pretty all i can understand there asking.there isnt much information other wise.

OpenStudy (some.random.cool.kid):

yep, thats right so its just asking how many combos can you try... so just do 5 x 6 and your set. @ksc1012

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont understand that is all they gave me for a question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we are doing combinations and permutations

OpenStudy (some.random.cool.kid):

yeah i get it now there is no more information needed sorry for the confusion. its just asking how many different combos on the lock can you try with 5 tumblers and 6 positions in each. so whats 5 x 6? do you know?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30 but it said that is wrong

OpenStudy (some.random.cool.kid):

hmm let me see ill check it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks so much

OpenStudy (some.random.cool.kid):

ahhhhh my mistake sorry got it now this isnt simple multiplication.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i know

OpenStudy (some.random.cool.kid):

you were supposed to power it ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 5 to the 6th power?

OpenStudy (some.random.cool.kid):

for example 6^5 this means 6 times it self 5 time which would look a little something like this: 6*6*6*6*6*6=7776

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok other way around

OpenStudy (some.random.cool.kid):

so i assume the final answer is 7776 try that and tell me if you get it right :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be 5 to the 6th power or 6th to the 5th power

OpenStudy (some.random.cool.kid):

hmm your right nice catch... 5 to the 6th power. thanks

OpenStudy (some.random.cool.kid):

because its 5 tumblers and in it 6 positions.

OpenStudy (some.random.cool.kid):

so instead it should look something like this 5*5*5*5*5 = 15625

OpenStudy (some.random.cool.kid):

so you think you got it now? @ksc1012
