OpenStudy (jacob902):

You are remodeling your kitchen. You've contacted two tiling companies who gladly told you how long it took their workers to tile a floor of a similar size. Jim completed half the floor in 7 hours. Pete completed the other half of the floor in 6 hours. If Pete can lay 15 more tiles per hour than Jim, what equation would you use to find the rate that Jim can lay tiles? Let x represent Jim's rate. explain why the answer is correct

OpenStudy (baru):

lets call jim's rate x and petes rate y. that means jim lay's 'x' tiles per hour and pete lays y tiles per hour

OpenStudy (jacob902):

OpenStudy (baru):

ok, now we have two variables x and y. from the info given in the question, we can write two equations for x and y

OpenStudy (baru):

from the question, we know that the number of tiles jim can lay in 7hrs is equal to the number of tiles pete can lay in 6hrs thus 7x=6y

OpenStudy (baru):

but it also says, pete is faster by 15 tiles per hour thus y=x+15

OpenStudy (baru):

substiute y=x+15 in the first equation to get the answer
