A simple question about writers.
Before I get to anything, I just want to say I mean this for any kind of writer; books, movies, games, anything. I’m, for the most part, an easy to please reader. As long as the characters are solid and the story isn’t pointless or cliché, I’ll probably enjoy it, though I do seem to focus on characters more than the story itself. I feel like if the characters are good, then the story will play out better, making it just better all around. Anyway, obviously there are many people that are fans of certain writers, which I don’t really, but to the point. I feel like authors can’t really make more than one story that they are very invested in, and have actually taken a long time to think through, and just simply enjoy writing. Don’t get me wrong, they are many stories I absolutely love, but I don’t think Neil Druckmann can ever beat The Last Of Us, I just don’t believe anything else he writes will be able to compete with that, especially the ending. I’m sure writers like him can still make good stories, but even if they are, I feel like they’d feel worse than they really were, just because of their previous masterpiece. Again, I do mean this mainly for people like that that have really spent a long time on something and loving every minute of it. I don’t think they could really do that again. The few times I have seen a writer like that make something else, it’s almost always one of two things; either a cheap rip off of the last story, or that stories opposite, as in they tried the same story, but with a twist on every major part. Anyway, this has just been bugging me for a while, thought I’d throw this out there and hear some others’ thoughts on this.
I agree, I've seen so many writers do that.
Many writers have one single solid story and they spend their life caught up in that single story. They can't let go of what they believe is perfection (or at least the closest they'll ever get to attaining perfection) so they continue to rework the same storyline over and over. It's what they know and trust. To writers who have already wrote their masterpiece, I suggest they try to go as far from it as they possibly can. Do something completely else. Not the opposite of it, because that is still a version of the original piece. What I mean is write something so different that they feel like it can't be any good...then run with it.
