Why did Federalists want a stronger national government in 1787? What problems had arisen that suggested the Articles of Confederation government was too weak?

OpenStudy (tumblewolf):

The US had just gotten out from under the powerful control of Great Britain. The early US documents were designed so that the new form of government couldn't have too much power. It also gave the central government no control over trade and they couldn't levy taxes. This created some problems on the international front. It also weakened our borders by saying that Congress had no power to draw an army. With not being able to produce a military force or draw funding from the states it made us weak to fend off any attacks.
