it's been a while...

I haven't posted anything new in this topic in a bit... so here's something new.

it was late at night
and, like usual, you were there
on my mind and in my heart
but you were never always there
never there for long
and never there long enough for me to miss you

the lightning was flashing,
bringing little light to my room
in short bursts every five minutes

I laid still, enjoying the peace
and the quiet of the night
not thinking of the few short hours
in which it would take the sun to reappear

and it was only night to me
because it was only dusk to you
halfway across the country
our lives seperated by a distance I couldn't close

and it occurred to me then
that, though you didn't know it yet,
things had changed
and I was no longer that girl you had left behind
and I was no longer the one who would wait on you
waiting for you to make up your mind
and waiting on you to love me
or maybe just waiting for the truth

whatever it was
it wasn't worth waiting on
and I was sorry
that it had taken me this long to see it
sorry that I'd let myself believe
in something that would never again be real
and I was sorry that I had to lie to you
because I'd told myself that I wouldn't

but how could I keep a promise to you
when I couldn't keep one to myself?
