OpenStudy (matlee):

Need Help, kinda.

OpenStudy (matlee):

If a patient doesn't receive treatment for a certain injury within 2 hours after injury, the patient's chance of survival starts decreasing by 15% each hour. If no treatment has been given within 4 hours after injury, roughly, what chance of survival will the patient have?

OpenStudy (matlee):

70% 72% 75% 77% 80%

OpenStudy (matlee):

I know the answer i just need to know if other people know how to get there because i got it wrong the first time.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

let's say the patient has 100% chance to survive within the first two hours at hour 3, the patient doesn't get treatment, so what are the chances now?

OpenStudy (matlee):

85%

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

It's 15% per hour. We're talking 3 hours.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

now extend it out another hour

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

4*

OpenStudy (matlee):

I know the answer but i got i wanted to see if anyone else would get it right the first time because the first time i did not get it right. So if you guys are able to get the right answer ill know easier how to get there.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Ok but what was your answer?

OpenStudy (matlee):

No i cant tell , because what if it were a test what would be your first choice?

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

That's kind of our logic here. We don't want to risk giving you the answer if you didn't actually choose one.

OpenStudy (matlee):

Well, then ill tell u its not D.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

It doesn't matter if you're wrong, we're here to help not make fun of you.

OpenStudy (matlee):

No but the way the asked it is kinda confusing so i was wondering if was just me.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Ok we're not getting anywhere so let's just break it down. We're given 4 hours. Recall that it says the effects of survival chance decrease *after the first two hours*.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

And it's 15% per hour that's being removed, soooo....

OpenStudy (matlee):

Ok, so after i move it down 15% it will be 85% so then afterward it will be 70%

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Yep. 15 * 2 = 30 100 - 30 = 70 We're assuming they have 100% survival chance given the options.

OpenStudy (matlee):

So its 70%?

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Yeah.

OpenStudy (matlee):

Thats not it.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

What

OpenStudy (matlee):

that exactly what i thought.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

That has to be an error.

OpenStudy (matlee):

So do you guys see any other available answer

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Unless there is some miraculous chance a patient has 110% chance of surviving.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

No, that's the only answer there is....

OpenStudy (matlee):

Ikr

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

It's definitely an error on their part, it has to be 70.

OpenStudy (matlee):

Jim do u think its another answer.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

He's on another question atm.

OpenStudy (matlee):

Or possibly

OpenStudy (matlee):

O

OpenStudy (matlee):

Ok well heres the answer and explanation.

OpenStudy (matlee):

School laptops are so slow. Thats not it

OpenStudy (matlee):

At the end of two hours, the patient still has a 100% chance of survival. After three hours, he has an 85% of survival, or 0.85. After four hours, he has an 85% of the 85% he had at the end of three hours: 0.85 * 0.85 = 72.25% chance of survival.

OpenStudy (matlee):

Like what

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

oh

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

they were not clear at all with that

OpenStudy (matlee):

Here sother people explanation with it

OpenStudy (matlee):

The patient's chance of survival does not decrease as 100, 85, 70, 65, ... but 100, 85, 72, 61, .. In other words, each hour, the patient's chance of survival decreases by 15% of whatever it happens to be. You don't subtract 15 per hour, you multiply by .85 every hour. Going ten hours after the initial two would make the patient's chance of survival .85 ^ 10, or 20%

OpenStudy (matlee):

Lol yes they were not

OpenStudy (matlee):

I guess that for people who gotta guess

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

So basically what it's saying is that: 100% 1st hour after 2 hr limit = 85% obviously NOW HERES WHERE THEY DIDNT EXPLAIN IT They say that it DECREASES BY 15% EACH HOUR 85% - 15% = .85 * .85 I understand that this is supposed to play mind games with you but wow I don't think many people would have noticed that.

OpenStudy (matlee):

Lol yeah. But .85*.85=15% or is it just because it loses its own 15% each hour

OpenStudy (matlee):

Yes this is a military test but practice test

OpenStudy (matlee):

Well thanks for helping me out!

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

0.85 * 0.85 = .7225 = 72.25%

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

That's good to know lol

OpenStudy (matlee):

O gosh. F for me . hah. Yes ok well i have to go now see you soon!
