going from (0,3) to (1,1) we... go down 2 (rise = -2) over to the right 1 (run = 1) slope = rise/run = -2/1 = -2

Another way... rise over run... then if the slope appears to go up from left to right, it is positive. If goes down from left to right, it is negative. So... rise over run.... rise is y axis and run is x axis.
