Marcie wants to enclose her yard with a fence. Her yard is in the shape of a rectangle attached to a triangle. The formula for the area of the enclosed space is A = lw + 0.5bh. Solve for b.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

All its asking you to do is get b by itself

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to do that you first want to subtract lw from both sides you get. A-lw=.5bh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then you dived both sides by .5h that leaves you with b=a-lw/.5h

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

have you learned how to cancel out terms yet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i'm in 8th grade

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well in order to move a variable to the other side you have to use the opposite sign

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you would subtract

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A = lw + 0.5bh to get lw to the other side you subtract lw to both sides that get read of it one one side so know you have a-lw=.5bh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since you are multiplying .5bh the opposite sign would be division. so divide .5h from both sides because you need b all by itself on one side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that leaves you with a-lw/.5h=b do you get it now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kind of i think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what do you not get so i can explain it some more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so my answer is b = A divided by the quantity l times w plus 0.5 times h

OpenStudy (anonymous):

almost instead of plus 0.5 time h it would be divided by 0.5 times h

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its b = The quantity A minus l times w all divided by 0.5 times h

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes you got it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay thank you so much

OpenStudy (anonymous):

youre awesome!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your welcome, no problem. Thank you your cool too
