At cellular level, respiration means ingestion of oxygen to cell and excretion of carbon dioxide. In mitochondria the oxygen goes in cell and takes part in kerb's cycle. In this cycle oxidation of food especially glucose takes place. And carbon dioxide is the biproduct. In this way the only mitochondria plays role in cellular respiration.
