OpenStudy (fairegaming):

This looks really hard, I am pretty sure I can solve what they want but it would take me a while and I need some guidance... -3(x - 5) - 8(y + 2) + (-3)(6 - 4b) All I know is that it wants to find the end number of non variables. Like the first one is -3 x -5. since its -3( x - 5)... The only thing that confuses me is the random (-3)(6 - 4b) Like what? Thanks if you help ;)

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

Help please??????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the goal here? to eliminate the parentheses?

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

No its to find the total sum of the non-variable number. Like A. -3x - 8y -15 B. -3x - 8y +15 C. -3x -8y + 20 D. -3x -8y -20

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

So your trying to find the "End" number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the "total sum of the non-variable number" of \(-3x-8y-15\) equal \(-15\)

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

-3(x - 5) - 8(y + 2) + (-3)(6 - 4b) Answer it from here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the only way i can make sense out of this is to "remove the parentheses using the distributive property, then combine like terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for example \[-3(x-5)=-3x+15\]

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

Yeah Like that, but were not trying to find the -3x ***TAKE THAT ALL OUT*** and keep the 15, then go on to the next distributive and get the non-variable then add it to the +15

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

And keep Going till theres no more of the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so we ignore the \(-3x\) and hold on to the \(+15\)

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then what do you get when you disitribute the \(-8\) in the term \[ - 8(y + 2) \]?

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

A. -3x - 8y -15 B. -3x - 8y +15 C. -3x -8y + 20 D. -3x -8y -20 Are the answers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

those answers all have \(x\) and \(y\) in them!

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

See how the end has different numbers? Focus on THAT not the x's and the y's cause their all the same, You getting me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

..........

OpenStudy (anonymous):

distribute \(-3(x - 5) - 8(y + 2) \) and see what you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you will defiinitetly get \(-3x\) and \(-8y\) for sure

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

All the answers on my thing say Minus 8 not negative 8

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

15 + -18 RIght???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i can see why you are confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if the the question is \[-3(x - 5) - 8(y + 2) + (-3)(6 - 4b) \] then the answer will have to have a \(b\) in it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you post a screen shot?

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

I got D... Cause 15 + -16 = -1 which then -18 + -1 = -19??

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

ughhh

OpenStudy (freckles):

what did you do with the b in the expression? why does it disappear?

OpenStudy (freckles):

is b suppose to be a type-o?

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

Ughhh This is so stressful but here... I forgot to put 12b...

OpenStudy (fairegaming):

Im sayin D

OpenStudy (freckles):

oh the problem makes way more sense now

OpenStudy (freckles):

yes 15-16-18=-19 the answer D above is not correct but the answer D on the page you showed here is correct
