An organized crime is any group having some manner of a formalized structure and whose primary objective is to obtain something through illegal activities. Gambling, copyright infringement, kidnapping, smuggling, etc.

Crime which involves acts that interfere with the operations of society and the ability of people to function efficiently. Public drunk, Drug crimes, Prostitution, etc.

Why do you think society and the media focus on street crimes rather than white-collar crime given the financial costs of the latter?

Violence sells news, and everyone wants attention and to be the first person to break the headline. They want viewers and to promote business so the focus on violence.
Scholars have suggested several ways of better controlling organized crime than were discussed in the unit. If you were given the task of controlling organized crime, what would you choose to do (you can discuss some of the ideas from scholars or your own ideas)? Why do you think this would reduce organized crime?
