What are three main points of the Compromise of 1850? The United States would forgive all of Texas's debt in exchange for land. Popular sovereignty would allow new states to decide the issue of slavery. Slave trading was to be officially outlawed in several states forever. New Mexico was going to be allowed to enter the Union as a free state. Penalties for assisting escaped slaves would be greatly increased.
