Perhaps you could use a personal experience to add to your understanding of this topic. I have a good friend who was in the Pacific during WWII. He was at Iwo Jima and counts himself lucky to have survived that experience. Iwo was a stepping stone. Their goal was the Japanese homeland. The plan was to invade along the lines of what the allies had done at Normandy. My friends group, and others, would land on Honshu and head for Tokyo. They had seen the fierce, unrelenting determination of the Japanese on Iwo. They knew that men fighting for their homeland would add to their determination. My friend and his buddies had very little reason to think they would survive. They were in the first wave of assault. Then they learned that President Truman had made a decision that literally saved their lives. Bombs had been dropped that convinced Japan to quit making war on its neighbors. Japanese civilians lost their lives and major cities destroyed in a way never seen before. But that same destruction and loss of life would have been the result of an invasion. My friend lived. He returned to the US, raised a family and is a wonderful slide guitar player. He'll die in the next few years in his 90s at home with family. He did not die on a Japanese island because his President chose to end the war quickly.
