Fraction question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[(5^{2}) - \left(\begin{matrix}1 \\ 2\end{matrix}\right)^{2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

600.25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait nvm its 24.75

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you explain how you got that answer?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

@Savannah216 We usually write fractions using \frac{1}{2}. What you wrote resembles another math notation for combinations. So since @LittleNinja forgot to explain how the answer was obtained, here's the explanation: \(5^2 -(\frac{1}{2})^2=25-\frac{1^2}{2^2}=25-\frac{1}{4}=24\frac{3}{4}\) @LittleNinja 1. When working with fractions, we prefer to keep the result as a fraction, so 24.75 would seem like a calculator result with decimals. 2. We do not give direct answers here.
