An effective trick I think would work is to multiply both denominators to get the lowest common denominator between the two. But there's a little more to do beyond that.

So I'd say with 1/6 and 2/9, multiply 9 by 2 and 6 by 3 so they will both equal 18. And do the same with the numerator.

Then multiply 1 by 3 and 2 by 2 and you should have 3/18 and 4/18.
