(WIILL GIVE MEDAL) Which sentence contains a remote reference? 1.)After Waldo's lawn had been mowed, he cooled off in the swimming pool. 2.)After his lawn had been mowed, Waldo cooled off in the swimming pool. 3.)After Waldo mowed his lawn, he cooled off in the swimming pool.

First of all: what is a remote reference in your point of view you have to know what this is in order for me to help you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

REMOTE REFERENCES If the antecedent is too far from a pronoun, the meaning will not be immediately clear to the reader and he will be forced to hunt through the preceding sentence or paragraph for the proper antecedent. Another noun appearing between the antecedent and the pronoun adds to the confusion. Example: Remote: The family sat in the waiting room while Angela was fitted for new glasses. They had been shopping. In this example the pronoun they is too far from its antecedent, family. Although Angela is not plural, the reader still must grope for the identity of the group that had been shopping. One way to clear up the confusion would be to repeat the antecedent in the second sentence: The family sat in the waiting room while Angela was fitted for new glasses. The family had been shopping. A second means of clarification would be to change the second sentence into a subordinate clause, with the pronoun placed near the correct antecedent: After the family had finished shopping, they sat in the waiting room while Angela was fitted for new glasses. Notice that in this revised sentence, the antecedent is placed before the pronoun for clearer reference. Another type of remote reference involves the use of possessive nouns used as antecedents. Example: Vague: Once Gloria's employees were selected, she trained them to do a thorough job. The pronoun she refers to Gloria. However, the antecedent is in the possessive form and is being used as an adjective. The sentence can be made clearer by changing Gloria's back to its regular noun form Gloria. Example: Clearer: Once Gloria selected her employees, she trained them to do a thorough job.
