Peeing my pants with an audience! Growing up has been pain in the butt. There’s no direction manual or tour guide that helps me to prepare for all the shenanigans and mishaps that have occurred along the way. Like others I have had my share of spills, but instead of slowing me down, they have added to my growths as a person. I remember my first year of school being intimidating as ever. Riding the bus for the first time without my parents was hell, I dreaded being away from home for 7 hours at a time, and being surrounded by kids who all felt the same stomach tied in knots feeling that I was undergoing. It was a life altering time. I even remember forcing my dad to sit with me through a few of our classes, because I was so devastatingly anxious about school. As time went on, my peers and I became more acclimated to each other and our surroundings, which ultimately made for a more comfortable experience for us. I took my fair share of humiliations in the class, as did everyone else. The most humiliation I recall was peeing my pants in front of the whole class. We had a bathroom in our class at the time so I asked the teacher for the bathroom pass and I rushed to the bathroom. As I approached the bathroom door I saw the light was shining from underneath it, leading me to assume that someone was in there. After pacing the floor waiting for the unknown person to leave the bathroom, I couldn’t hold it anymore. I was soaked in urine! I later heard that there wasn’t anyone in the bathroom. The light was just left on. I have learned to let go in other ways since then, pun intended. Despite the six-year-old me who still hangs out in the back of my head screaming, “You’re going to pee your pants again!” The adult me imagines my first day of college filled with excitement and joy, since I am going to be paving the path for the first day of the rest of my life living independently. It hasn’t been until recently that I have realized my experience as a six year old may have impacted my life in a positive way. Conquering such obstacles in my life has helped me develop important life attributes such as determination, courage, and willpower, as well as a sense of humor, which are invaluable and necessary tools needed in life. I created a habit of applying these traits to the hurdles I have hit in my life. By doing so I have given myself a way to strengthen and fine tune my life skills to be used again later down the road.
