The cost to rent a car is $25 plus an additional $0.15 for each mile the car is driven. How many miles was a car driven if it had a bill of $71.80?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well first we have to factor in the $25. So lets take that away from the total. $71.80-$25 is $46.80. Now we have to divide the total by $0.15 since we multiplied .15 by each mile. $46.80/$0.15 is 312. So the car drove 312 miles to be charged a total of $71.80. \[(75.80 - 25) \div .15 = 312\]

0.15 * ???

Is a less complicated and wordy way.

0.15 / 312 = 46.80 46.80 + 25
