well first you got to minus 2 from each side which leaves you?
you want to isolate the variable \(b\). to do that you need to do: \(-4b + 2 = 18\) \(-4b + 2 - 2 = 18 - 2\) \(-4b = 16\) \(\large \frac{-4b}{-4} = \frac{16}{-4}\) \(\color{green}{ b = -4}\) check: \(-4(-4) + 2 = 18\) \(16 + 2 = 18\) \(18 = 18\)
