7 1/7 - 1 9/10 = ?

OpenStudy (flygirlmandi):

use benchmarks to estimate the difference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I do not know exactly what using benchmarks means, but if I had to estimate this difference I would say that 7 and 1/7th is pretty close to 7, and 1 and 9/10 is reeeeally close to 2, so the answer probably isn't too far off from 7-2.

OpenStudy (flygirlmandi):

ok

Here is a decent write up on using benchmarks as an estimating tool (it is for 3rd-5th grade, not sure if that applies to you but I don't mean to imply it is young for you since I do not know your grade) http://www.carrollk12.org/Assets/file/ElemMath/Grade5/Unit1/LP.5.NF.2.EstimateBenchFractions.pdf
