OpenStudy (leahhhmorgannn):

Explain why the two figures below are similar. Use complete sentences and provide evidence to support your explanation. http://prntscr.com/91swam

OpenStudy (leahhhmorgannn):

I know they'd be similar because they are the same shape, the size has just changed. That's the definition of similarity in my lesson. Do you think they just want that or is that not enough to justify it?

OpenStudy (leahhhmorgannn):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

`Use complete sentences and provide evidence to support your explanation.` yes they want you to back up your claim

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what I suggest is look at the slopes of each pair of corresponding lines (eg: AB and FG)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Also, compare the distances as well (eg: distance from A to B, distance from F to G)

OpenStudy (leahhhmorgannn):

And finding the slopes should be easy for me, but how do you find the distance? I don't quite remember that.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

by using the distance formula \[\Large d = \sqrt{\left(x_{2}-x_{1}\right)^2+\left(y_{2}-y_{1}\right)^2}\]

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You won't need the distance formula for something like B to G (just count out the spaces between the two points; this only works if both points have the same x or y coordinate)

OpenStudy (leahhhmorgannn):

Okay, so I'll do all that. It may take me a while, but I will. And in my final response, I just back up my claim bu stating all those facts?

OpenStudy (leahhhmorgannn):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you can show the following AB = k*FG BC = k*GH CD = k*HI DE = k*IJ EA = k*JF where k is some fixed number AND if you can show that the corresponding sides have the same slopes, then you have proven the two figures to be similar

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

`And in my final response, I just back up my claim bu stating all those facts?` yes correct

OpenStudy (leahhhmorgannn):

Okay. That'll take a while, but thank you for clarifying the steps I need to take with this.
