1. Directions: Select all the correct answers.Based on the passage, which two inferences can be made about Jo? She likes to sit by the fire and read. She is an introvert who likes to keep to herself. She is imaginative and curious . She doesn't obey her elders and often gets in trouble. She is adventurous and likes being outdoors.

"What in the world are you going to do now, Jo?" asked Meg one snowy afternoon, as her sister came tramping through the hall, in rubber boots, old sack, and hood, with a broom in one hand and a shovel in the other. "Going out for exercise," answered Jo with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. "I should think two long walks this morning would have been enough! It's cold and dull out, and I advise you to stay warm and dry by the fire, as I do," said Meg with a shiver. "Never take advice! Can't keep still all day, and not being a pussycat, I don't like to doze by the fire. I like adventures, and I'm going to find some." Meg went back to toast her feet and read Ivanhoe, and Jo began to dig paths with great energy. The snow was light, and with her broom she soon swept a path all round the garden, for Beth to walk in when the sun came out and the invalid dolls needed air. Now, the garden separated the Marches' house from that of Mr. Laurence. Both stood in a suburb of the city, which was still country-like, with groves and lawns, large gardens, and quiet streets. A low hedge parted the two estates. On one side was an old, brown house, looking rather bare and shabby, robbed of the vines that in summer covered its walls and the flowers, which then surrounded it. On the other side was a stately stone mansion, plainly betokening every sort of comfort and luxury, from the big coach house and well-kept grounds to the conservatory and the glimpses of lovely things one caught between the rich curtains. Yet it seemed a lonely, lifeless sort of house, for no children frolicked on the lawn, no motherly face ever smiled at the windows, and few people went in and out, except the old gentleman and his grandson. To Jo's lively fancy, this fine house seemed a kind of enchanted palace, full of splendors and delights which no one enjoyed. She had long wanted to behold these hidden glories, and to know the Laurence boy, who looked as if he would like to be known, if he only knew how to begin. Since the party, she had been more eager than ever, and had planned many ways of making friends with him, but he had not been seen lately, and Jo began to think he had gone away, when she one day spied a brown face at an upper window, looking wistfully down into their garden, where Beth and Amy were snow-balling one another. "That boy is suffering for society and fun," she said to herself. "His grandpa does not know what's good for him, and keeps him shut up all alone. He needs a party of jolly boys to play with, or somebody young and lively. I've a great mind to go over and tell the old gentleman so!"

from Your Friends and Neighbors by c. safos I'm not the most social of people. I don't get invitations to birthday parties. I don't answer my phone. I haven't been to a movie in five years. I do most of my shopping online. I even have a sign outside of my house that specifically states "No Solicitors." One day in late December, I met a man named Dewy Scruggs. Dewy came to me on a particularly unusual December morning. The sun was out. It was mild. There wasn't a cloud in the sky, and then, there was a knock on the door. Dewy was on the other side of the peephole. He said, "Good day, sir. My name is Dewy Scruggs, and I'm with . . ." "No solicitors," I responded through the door. "I can see that sir, but I have information that could change your life," Dewy said. "No solicitors," I firmly said again. "Sir, I feel just awful about bothering you, but I think you should know your life is in danger," Dewy said. I went back to the peephole and looked out. Dewy had somehow produced a chair and made himself comfortable on the front porch. "Did you know," he asked, "they don't consider Pluto a planet anymore? I mean how can they do that? Who are they anyway? What will become of the rest of the planets?" He scratched at his chin. "You know, Mr. Soltz . . ." He knew my name! "With the global warming and everything, many of the biggest cities in this nation will be flooded under water. Even this very city," he said. Dewy took out a mobile phone and tapped away at the keys. "We're all going under at some point," Dewy said. That last statement sent a cold shiver up my back. Slowly, I latched the chain lock to my door hoping the sound of sliding metal would be as quiet as a whisper. "I heard that, Mr. Soltz," said Dewy. "If you could just . . ." "What's going on out here?" cried Mrs. Montgomery, the lonely hermit from next door. "Hello, Mrs. Montgomery. I'm trying to talk to your neighbor, Mr. Soltz," said Dewy. He knew my neighbor's name! "Everything is fine, Edna," I said through the wall we shared, which was as thin as tissue paper. Suddenly, I heard another voice. "Hey, mister," said the voice to Dewy. It was that little kid from the third floor. I think his name was Gary, or maybe it was Jerry. "That's Old-Man Soltz's apartment. He doesn't buy things from anyone. I tried to sell him some candy last year, and he told me to get lost." "That wasn't very nice, Mr. Soltz," said Dewy. Outside, Dewy reached into his pocket and gave Gary (or Jerry) some loose change. "Well, maybe I'll have better luck with Old-Man Soltz," Dewy said to the boy.

Like Mike Jimmy had been visiting the same Web site over and over again for a month. It did not offer streaming video or MP3s, just pictures of shoes with prices next to them. He was looking at a pair of Air Jordan shoes. Neither Jimmy nor his parents could afford the shoes when they first came out. Back then, all he could do was look at them. They were in music videos, in television commercials, and on the feet of his wealthier classmates. He looked and dreamed but was never able to get a pair, until now. Jimmy avoided looking at the price. Two hundred dollars was more than the combined cost of every shoe he owned. As he moved his cursor over the "buy now" button, his breathing became heavy. He was nervous. He reminded himself that he was no longer 13. He had a good job and was living a comfortable life. He could now afford to buy the shoes. Just as Jimmy was about to click on the "buy now" button, Kelly, his girlfriend, came up behind him and said, "Those are ugly! My brother had a pair when we were kids. I always made fun of him for wearing them. Please tell me that you're not going to spend two hundred dollars on those hideous things!" Jimmy could not explain to Kelly why he wanted the shoes. Part of the reason was that he had a hard time explaining his thoughts to others. But the main reason was that Kelly did not grow up in a home in which a pair of shoes could be easy to look at but impossible to own. She just did not understand, and she proved it every time she said, "I'm surprised your parents didn't buy you those shoes just to shut you up!" Jimmy's friends Jerome and Albert were sitting on the other side of the room. They both came from backgrounds that were similar to his. He hoped they could explain things to Kelly. They both tried. They both failed. The room fell silent, and then Jimmy spoke up, saying, "I've done it. They will arrive this Wednesday!" Jimmy left work a little early on Wednesday. He wanted to be home when the package arrived. When he pulled up in the driveway, he saw the package on his porch. He took it inside and opened it. He pulled the left shoe out of the box and stared at it. Later that evening, Jimmy went over to Jerome's apartment. When he walked in, Jerome and Albert looked at his feet. He was wearing the same old shoes. Jerome asked him why he was not wearing his new Air Jordan shoes. With shock Jimmy replied, "Those are two hundred dollar shoes! Why would I want to wear them?"

Dustin’s tooth had been bothering him for weeks. Every time he took a bite of food, drank something cold, or even spoke, a throbbing pain would shoot through his lower jaw and up into his skull. He had been silently living with the pain for so long because he did not want to have to go to the dentist. It was not that he was afraid of the pain. That did not really bother him. He knew that the dentist would tell him that his tooth was hurting because he was not brushing his teeth regularly or taking care of his gums. The dentist could not really do much about that, but he could tell Dustin’s mom. Dustin could not remember the last time he brushed his teeth or used mouthwash, but he could remember that he told his mother that he did both the night before, and the night before that, and the night before that. If she found out that he had been lying about brushing his teeth and using mouthwash for months, if not longer, she would fly into an uncontrollable rage. Dustin knew he had to think of a plan. He could not tell his mom that his tooth had been hurting for weeks because then she would ask him why he waited so long to tell her. How would he explain that? Also, he could not casually bring up going to the dentist because that would make his mother suspicious. What 11-year-old boy asks to go to the dentist? No, neither of those would work. He had to think of something that was equal parts sneaky and honest. After hours of work, he came up with a plan that was neither. He knew that his mom was cooking chicken that night, so he decided to pretend that he broke his tooth on a chicken bone. He was convinced that his plan was foolproof. So, as he ate supper that night, he waited to catch his mother looking at him as he was putting a piece of chicken in his mouth. Upon finding the perfect opportunity, he crunched down on the chicken bone and began screaming, "Ow, my tooth! My tooth! I think I broke it. Oh, I broke it. I broke it on the chicken bone that was just in my mouth a second ago. Oh, I broke my tooth on a chicken bone!" Dustin then looked over at his mother, expecting to see a look of concern, expecting to see her running towards him, but he saw neither. Instead, he saw her sitting calmly and then heard her say, "That’s odd. I’ve never seen a person have pain during the weeks leading up to breaking his tooth. I guess strange things happen when you go a whole year without brushing your teeth!"
