well, think carefully about what the recursive statement means

an = an-1 + d means

take the previous term and add d to it.

this will work for arithmetic sequences, since each consecutive term gets increased or decreased by the same amount

but not for geometric sequences, since in geometric sequences, each consecutive term gets multiplied by the same amount
