hello i really need some help please??? The members of a team can run 500 meters between 57 seconds and 73 seconds. A. Write an absolute value inequality describing the times for the runners.

OpenStudy (lochana):

you can say if the time for runners is t 57 < t < 73

OpenStudy (lochana):

but i am not quite sure about absolute value thing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (lochana):

but wait a second. I want to make sure about my answer

OpenStudy (lochana):

we usually absolute inequalities write something like this |x-a| > 1

OpenStudy (lochana):

so we need to give an answer similar to that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so how do we do that

OpenStudy (lochana):

so the answer should be |x -65| < 8

OpenStudy (lochana):

this means that if (x -65) is positive, you put positive of (x - 65) instead of |x -65| so x - 65 < 8 x < 73 this is one inequality we need

OpenStudy (lochana):

if (x - 65) is negative , you put negative of (x-65) instead of |x-65| so -(x-65) < 8 -x +65 < 8 -x < -57 x > 57 (remember you change the < into > mark when you change signs) so we get x> 57

OpenStudy (lochana):

I am sure about this answer now:) |x-65| < 8

OpenStudy (lochana):

have done absolute inequalities before?

OpenStudy (lochana):

have you done absolute inequalities before?
