MEDAL WILL BE GIVEN: 31. List the products of glycolysis. How many ATP molecules are produced and consumed by glycolysis? What effect does the presence of oxygen have on the event that follow glycolysis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In glycolysis, glucose is broken down into 2 pyruvate molecules. 2 ATP are used, 4 are made for a net of 2 ATP. Two NADH are also made, which are transported into the mitochondrion (using 2 ATP) and 6 ATP are made for an additional net of 4 ATP

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if oxygen is present the process can move to cellular respiration; using oxygen yields much more ATP

OpenStudy (sheerfire):

During glycolysis two molecles of ATP are used and four are made making a net gain of two ATP per glucose molecule entering glycolysis. The products also include two molecules of reduced NAD and two molecules of pyruvate. In the final stage of aerobic respiration, oxidative phosphorylation, oxygen acts as the final electron acceptor. In the mitochondrial matrix, a hydrogen and an electron are transferred to oxygen reducing it to water.
