I felt that work is a vector quantity but a textbook of mine said that it is a scalar quantity

@thevi It is a scalar quantity. The dot product of two vectors yields a scalar. The cross product of two vectors yields another vector.
Here\[\large \text{W}=\vec{F} \cdot \vec{d}\]is the dot product of two vectors.
