Suppose the yearly salaries in a small law firm are as follows: $45,000 $50,000 $50,000 $50,000 $65,000 $280,000 A. What is the mean and median of these six salaries? B. Adjust some of the six original salaries so that the mean increases, while the median decreases. C. Adjust some of the six original salaries so that the mean decreases, while the median increases.
I know how to do part A, but I'm not sure how to answer Parts B and C
u there?
Yes, hello!
@Anaise
good, so what does the equation mean when it says "Adjust" ?
I'm not sure
besides that, what is the mean?
The mean is $90,000
mode?
$50,000
median
$50,000
@LichKing sorry i can barely keep my eyes open
It's fine, though that's not my name ^^ Maybe you should go rest
i want you to get an answer, and that will happen
Okay thanks :)
@ShadowLegendX if he doesn't come i'll post the whole world .-.
What
Hello ^^
help this guy
Why
I havenʻt touched this stuff in years ._.
I'd appreciate it
I wanna go to bed and my eyes are quite bloodshot
Will you actually?
Yeah
A is finished, right?
Yes
So what is mean?
Do you want me to tell you what the value is, or what mean means?
wait
my computer sorry,
the mean would be 90000
Yes, what mean means
your average
Mean is the sum of the observations divided by the total number of observations
Good, now what is the median?
The middle number in a list, sorted either from greatest to least or least to greatest
50000 ^
I would increase $280,000 by $120,000 making it $400,000 total in that salary. Then decrease all $50,000 salaries to $45,000. Making the median $45,000 now. Lowering it. With the large increase in that one salary, now when you divide by 6, you will get a larger number than 90,000 ;P
Thus the mean will have increased
get it?
Ooh okay, so that's what they meant
This will be when you divide the sum of all 6 salaries by 6, the number will be larger. With that huge increase in that one salary, the over all sum of the salaries will be larger. So instead of the 6 equal parts of them being 90,000, they will be larger parts.
I think it was like 107k, Iʻm doing all of this on the google search bar (acts as a calculator) ;P
With the values I gave you, you can figure out the exact numbers if you need them for your assignment.
Okay thanks a lot! :) I think I understand what they want now, though I wish they would have went over adjustments beforehand
For C, you just have to do the opposite. If you want the mean to decrease, you need a smaller overall sum. So decrease some big numbers, (Iʻd suggest 280k, itʻs the easiest) and then since they want the median to rise, Iʻd do whatʻs easiest and just raise the 50k salaries to 55k. A small change, and it wonʻt affect the mean. Maybe decrease 280k to like 100k
Okay thanks, you've been a lot of help!
No problem ;P
I just realized we all have kitten icons
:D
I have another quick question, are you okay with Standard Deviation and Variances?
Uhh, post the question, let me see if I can remember it
