MIT 6.189 A Gentle Introduction to Programming Using Python (OCW)

I'm having trouble installing Python 2.6.6 on my Mac (OS X El Capitan). It downloads fine but I get an error that says "no software found to install." Anyone else had this problem? This mac has Python 2.7 pre-installed but the course materials say that version won't work. Insights? Thanks.

Try turning your computer on and off again.
Redownload Python and see if it'll install.
The download on Python.org says that it's a 32 bit distro. I'm not sure how tolerante El Capitain may be for that. Could you post a link to why the course says 2.7 won't work? That makes virtually no sense.
