Find the real numbers x and y that make the equation true

OpenStudy (sorryimfrankie):

-3 + yi = x + 6i

OpenStudy (sorryimfrankie):

I need someone to take me through the steps, not just solve it please

iYuko (iyuko):

First, re order the terms: -3 + iy = 6i + x

iYuko (iyuko):

Next, add 6i to each side: -3 + -6i + iy = 6i + -6i + x

iYuko (iyuko):

Then, combine like terms: 6i + -6i = 0 -3 + -6i + iy = 0 + x -3 + -6i + iy = x

OpenStudy (sorryimfrankie):

You mean subtract 6i from both sides?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3 + yi = x + 6i By inspection, x has to be -3 and y is 6.

OpenStudy (sorryimfrankie):

Thanks but can you show me how you got that? I'm trying to understand it all.

OpenStudy (sorryimfrankie):

@robtobey

OpenStudy (sorryimfrankie):

nevermind, i get it now - thanks!
