SOMEONE CHECK MY ANSWER PLEASE
Explain, in complete sentences, how you would use the elimination method to solve the following system of equations and provide the solution to the system. 5x - 9y = -16 2x + 6y = -16
5x - 9y = -16<-- multiply by -2 2x + 6y = -16<--- multiply by 5
after doing the math it is -10x+18y=32 10x+30y=-80 ADD THEM
48y=48 y=1 PLUG IN Y
But after plugging in y the equations x=2 and x=5 shouldnt they be the same? because then when i plug x into the equation with y it doesnt work out right
5(2)-9(1)=-16 no 2(5)+6(1)=-16 no
you made an error when you got to `48y=48` it should be `48y=-48`. Notice how the 48 on the right side is negative
so its -1
yes y = -1
so 5x-9(-1)=-16 5x+9=-16 5x=-7 x=-7/5
2x+6(-1)=-16 2x+6=-16 2x=-22 x=-11
subtract 9 from both sides to get 5x+9=-16 5x+9-9=-16-9 5x = -25
I forgot they were both negatives go you would add them
so x=-5 and x=-11
it should just be x = -5
2x+6(-1)=-16 2x-6 = -16 2x-6+6 = -16+6 2x = -10 x = -5
-16+6 is 10 im sorry
Wow i am bad with signs tonight LOL
Possibly a sign of fatigue, sorry I couldn't help the pun...
so the solution would be (-5,-1)?
so in the end, x = -5 and y = -1, yes
hahah! very punny
Thank you Jim! I appreciate it!
